What I've Learned from Starting a Podcast + My 5 Favorite Podcasts
Hey everyone. I, to be honest, I'm a little too lazy to write out a full blog post this month that I thought I would just come have a chat with you and then run it through my transcription tool. And you could either listen, or you could read as you prefer. So today I want to talk about what I've learned since I started my podcast.
It's, I'd say I knew from talking to other people that had a podcast, I knew it was going to be like quite the endeavor. Like I knew it was going to be a lot of work. and I knew it was going to be a really big learning curve, but I like a challenge. I have found that all to be true.
I think the hardest part is courage.
Like getting up the courage to get the right guests, to ask the people you really admire to be on your podcast, especially when you feel like you don't have a lot of evidence that the podcast, I don't really have very many episodes out, or I don't really have very many listeners, but I have to get the right people to provide the right content, to get the listeners and the engagement that I want.
Getting up the courage to just ask and see what happens has been something that I've been working on. And and also one of those things, it's building a rapport with people that I would love down the line to have on the podcast in future seasons, because across seasons two and three kind of lining up, right now this season one has been all about simplifying systems.
And season two is going to be all about, working within your natural rhythm. And season three is going to be all about how to create content for your business or your project in a simplified way that doesn't exhaust you. Because I think content creation is so damn important in business, but it can feel like it drains you if you don't manage it really well. Because you can be creating newsletters and blog posts and social media posts and podcasts and blogs and YouTube videos. Find a way to make that all just work really well for you focusing on the right channels, those kinds of things, and also using systems within your chosen channels to make it really work for you. And that's what I'm really excited to talk about in season three.
I've also learned editing a podcast is really hard.
I have really good software. I'm using a software called Descript. And it translates everything. you can actually edit the podcast by editing the transcript. You can also like overdubs. So if I make a mistake, I can actually type my words out and it speaks as me, which is nuts.
So I'm having a lot of fun with my deep self and this software, but if I make a mistake or like I accidentally used the wrong microphone once and I was all horrible then having to re record stuff. trying to make sure that my guests, this is coming across as well as possible. And then the conversation selves in that role, is something I'm definitely learning.
I cannot wait to get to them the place where I'm outsourcing the editing of my podcast. Hopefully in 2021, that will be my reality at some stage.
And that brings me to back to this idea of having good software.
So the software that I'm using is amazing, right? I'm using software that, it does a lot of the heavy lifting for me.
I can create, all the different things I need to in the transcript. And I also can create those. You've probably seen on our social media, but audio grams, where it says the words that you can hear, and it shows the vibe of somebodies voice. And so it creates all of that. And that's not an additional service now.
I wouldn't say it's just the cheapest, podcasting editing tool I found like you can do it for free with anchor. But it's just so fricking handy and I really enjoy learning it.
The other thing I’m learning is just like any other thing I've built in my business. It takes time!
Like right now, I have three episodes on there's another one out this week.
And I feel like I'm putting really your content out there, but I feel like I'm not really sure how it's being received. Like I know some people sent me messages, so I am trying to build up the app for getting people to review it. And I'm asking, trying to build up like getting more and more people on it.
And it just seems like it's a really, it's still a big bit of a Hill to climb, but it's going to be girly thing.
Finally circling back to my own lessons that we're going to be teaching as season three, but I'm still figuring out promotion for the podcast.
How many did the workout, figuring out how to make it easier for guests to share their own episodes and still I've got some systems in place, of course, but, I'm still figuring out how much I want to share on.
My Instagram account versus the other Instagram account for the capable collective. and I'm still figuring out like how much contents I want to be putting out through the capable, collective versus calibrated concepts versus like my ecosystem. I'm still really finding the balance between these two businesses I'm building.
Obviously there's a lot overlap, so I'm still learning a lot.
I hope this has been helpful for you. The other thing I want us to talk about today is just what my favorite podcasts are:
As a podcaster (that sounds nuts, it doesn't feel real) I just want to let you know who the people I've listened to.
I honestly, for the most part, listen to a lot more music than I would podcasts, but I do like podcasts. I just find that when I'm doing critical thinking stuff, I end up having to pause quite a lot or I just miss everything.
But the podcasts that I do listening to are:
Entrepreneurial Outlaws by Melanie Knights
My favorite thing about Melanie is that she is a no-holds-barred type of person. She tells it like it is and encourages those around her to do the same.
Better Than Big by Ashely Gartland
Ashley’s forte is helping people build their businesses around their lives and she has fantastic discussions around how people have made that happen for them — there is no formula. We each get to make it up for ourselves.
Get Together by People & Company
All about communities! I read their book of the same title and have been hooked ever since. I love hearing about what makes groups of people special. Why they exist and how they thrive!
Tilted A Lean In Podcast
They get THE experts to dive into the deep and complex issues around gender. And when listening you properly feel like you’re a part of the conversation.
Unlocking Us by Brené Brown
Does Brené even need an explanation?
P.S. You can listen to the Capable Collective Podcast here! I’d also truly appreciate it if you would leave a review on Apple Podcasts.
